Demographers find a spacing of about two to four years between births is the most common in many Western countries. Gaps outside that range are still completely normal — family timing depends on far more than averages.
What are “Irish twins”?
An informal (originally pejorative, now mostly playful) term for siblings born less than 12 months apart. This calculator flags a gap as Irish twins when the two birth dates are under a year apart.
Is there a medically recommended gap between pregnancies?
Health bodies recommend spacing for the mother's recovery: Mayo Clinic summarises the research as waiting about 18 to 24 months — but less than five years — after a live birth before the next pregnancy. Talk to a doctor about your own situation; this calculator only measures dates.
Does the calculator handle leap years and month lengths?
Yes. It counts whole calendar years first, then whole months using each month's real length (28–31 days, including leap-year Februaries), then the remaining days — so a gap like “2 years, 11 months, 27 days” never gets rounded to 3 years.
Can I use it for more than two siblings?
